Ramana Maharshi

Embody Your Soul’s Destiny

Ramana Maharshi

A Saint’s Journey

Spiritual texts whisper of a path veiled from ordinary sight, a journey undertaken by saints that resembles the effortless flight of a bird against the vast canvas of the sky. Most mortals must traverse this path with measured steps, diligently seeking spiritual growth. But a rare few, like stars erupting into sudden brilliance, are born enlightened, their souls already soaring towards the ultimate reality – the boundless essence of the Self. These luminous beings uplift humanity with their mere presence, radiating a light that pierces the veil of illusion and offers a glimpse of true happiness, a joy far surpassing any fleeting pleasure the world can offer.

Sri Ramana Maharshi was such a being. His life served as a living testament to the profound wisdom of the ancient Vedanta teachings. He embodied pure wisdom and detachment, a beacon of serenity amidst the ceaseless whirring of the world. Such spiritual giants appear infrequently, like celestial visitors gracing the Earth for a brief time. Yet, their impact resonates across generations, benefiting all who come within their sphere. Their presence ignites a new wave of hope, a reminder of the boundless potential that lies dormant within each human heart.

Ramana Maharshi’s story begins not far from the sacred mountain Arunachala, a revered pilgrimage site in South India. Around 30 miles south of Madurai lies Tiruchuli, a village steeped in ancient traditions. Here, amidst the murmur of prayers offered at the revered Shiva temple, lived Sundaram Aiyar, a kind and generous lawyer, and his pious wife Alagammal. On December 30th, 1879, on a holy Hindu day celebrating the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva (Ardra Darshanam), their son Venkataraman was born. Little did anyone know that this seemingly ordinary birth marked the arrival of a soul destined to illuminate the path for countless seekers.

Venkataraman’s childhood unfolded much like any other. He attended local schools, displaying an average aptitude for studies. However, a profound shift awaited him at the tender age of sixteen.

A Life of Service, Love, and Giving

Drawn to the Holy Hill

Sri Ramana Maharshi’s life was marked by a profound connection to Arunachala, the holy hill. At the young age of sixteen, Venkataraman, as he was known then, first heard about Arunachala and felt an inexplicable pull towards it. Reading the Periyapuranam, a book about Saiva saints, further ignited his spiritual yearning.

A Sudden Awakening

This yearning culminated in a dramatic awakening at the age of seventeen. Confronted by the fear of death, Venkataraman experienced a sudden realization of his eternal Self, distinct from the physical body. This transformative experience instilled a deep sense of peace and detachment from worldly concerns.

The Journey to Arunachala

Venkataraman’s newfound spiritual focus led to a disconnect with his previous life. He felt compelled to leave home in search of Arunachala, resorting to a ruse to avoid resistance from his family. His journey was filled with chance encounters and acts of kindness from strangers, including a vision of brilliant light at the Arayaninallur temple. Upon reaching Tiruvannamalai, he entered the Arunachaleshwara temple and experienced immense joy, finally reuniting with his spiritual father, Arunachala.

Life at the Temple

In Tiruvannamalai, Venkataraman, who came to be known as Ramana, did not receive formal initiation as a sannyasi. He embraced a simple life at the temple, shedding his worldly possessions. Though initially silent, he later engaged with devotees through writing and teachings. He faced challenges from mischievous boys but also received support from other devotees.

A Mother’s Plea

Ramana’s mother traveled to Tiruvannamalai to try and persuade him to return home. However, Ramana remained resolute in his spiritual path, offering solace through a written message. His mother eventually accepted his choice and even received spiritual guidance from him.

A Gathering of Seekers

Ramana attracted a diverse group of devotees, including scholars and Western seekers. Ganapati Muni, a renowned scholar, recognized Ramana’s spiritual stature and became a disciple. F.H. Humphreys, a British officer, was deeply impressed by Ramana’s presence and teachings.

Compassion for All Beings

Ramana embodied the principle of non-violence and compassion for all beings. He treated animals with respect and care, fostering a peaceful coexistence within the Ashram. He ensured their well-being and even mourned their passing with proper burial rituals.

The Enduring Legacy of Sri Ramanasramam

The Ramanasramam grew over time to accommodate an increasing number of visitors. New facilities were added, including a school, a publication department, and a temple dedicated to Ramana’s mother. The Ashram continues to be a center for spiritual guidance and the teachings of Sri Ramana Maharshi.
